　下痢は一般によくみられる症状で，「1日に3回以上の軟便もしくは水様便」と定義される^1）．急性下痢は「水分量，頻度が増加し14日以内に続いている便」，慢性下痢は「水分量，頻度が増加し28日以上続く便」と定義される^2）．さまざまな原因があるものの世界共通の健康問題であり，毎年約130万人の死亡を誘発し^3），発症，死亡はともに特に乳幼児に多いと報告されている^4）．
