脳深部刺激療法(deep brain stimulation:DBS)は定位脳手術手技を用いて深部電極を留置し,脳のさまざまな標的部位に対して電気刺激を行う治療法である.
不随意運動症に対する外科治療としてこれまで定位脳手術による破壊・凝固術が主であったが,DBSは①脳を破壊することなく,破壊・凝固と同等の効果を得ることができる,②両側の手術が破壊術と比較して安全に行える,③刺激条件を変更することで刺激による副作用を消失させ,症状の変化に合わせて調整することが可能である,という大きな利点があり,現在,破壊・凝固手術に取って代わっている.
