脳腫瘍の遺伝子を追って―スウェーデン経由イギリス行き

Ⅰ．はじめに

　私は現在イギリスのケンブリッジ大学Department of Pathologyに勤務している．最初は2年の予定で1991年にスウェーデンに留学したのが，2つの国，3つの都市，4つの研究所を回りまわって海外生活が今年で19年目になる．この間一貫して脳腫瘍，特に神経膠腫の発生にかかわる遺伝子を研究してきた．もともとは脳神経外科医の道を歩みはじめたものの，留学後研究に専念するようになって以来臨床を離れて久しい．したがって以下は私の海外遍歴と脳腫瘍をめぐる研究の話になる．臨床の第一線で働いておられる読者の方々には少々退屈に感じられるかもしれないが，脳腫瘍の基礎研究のほとんどが脳神経外科医によってなされているという日本の研究環境を考えると，興味をもっていただける方もおられるのではないかと期待して筆を進ませていただく．
