院内発症の下痢症の発生頻度は,McFarlandの報告1)によると一般内科病棟における382例の入院中126例(32.9%),Gareyらの報告2)では大学病院における485例の入院患者中60例(12.4%)と比較的高頻度に発症例があることがわかる.
また,院内発症下痢は,病原微生物による下痢症(感染性)と病原微生物によらない下痢症(医原性)とに大別される.McFarland1)は院内発症下痢126例中,37例(29.4%)は感染性,57例(45.2%)は医原性,32例(25.4%)は原因不明と報告している.
