　疫学という名称は1873年のThe Oxford English Dictionaryに「流行を取り扱う医学の一分野」^1）としてでてくる．しかし，教科書にその定義が示され，定着してきたのは最近30年前後である．その定義もこれまで，50編^1）以上は示されているが，その内容は類似している．代表的な内外の定義を各1編あげる．

R.（1964）^2）［Epidemiology is a field of science which is concerned with the various factors and conditions that determine the occurrence and distribution of health, disease, defect, disability, and death among groups of individuals.（疫学とは人間集団の健康，疾病，欠損（症），障害，死についてその発生，分布を規定する各種の要因や条件を研究する科学の一分野である．著者訳）」
