情報化社会におけるこころの健康問題―マスメディアによる自殺報道と群発自殺を中心に

ある人物の自殺が生じた後に，他の複数の自殺が誘発される群発自殺(clustered suicide)という現象が知られている¹⁾．高度に情報化した現代社会において，マスメディアは，自殺予防に十分に寄与する可能性がある反面，報道の仕方によっては広範囲に及ぶ複数の自殺を誘発する危険についても指摘されている．ある種の自殺では，「伝染」や「模倣」が大きな役割を果たしていることが古くから指摘されていた³⁾．しかし，精神医学や社会学の分野で，自殺に及ぼす模倣性や伝染性の役割，特に群発自殺とマスメディアの関係について詳しく検討されるようになったのは，ようやく1960年代後半からである．

新聞報道の影響

　1. 米国における研究

　1967年にMotto⁴⁾は，新聞のストライキがあった期間には自殺率の減少をみるのではないかという仮説を立てた．米国の7都市において新聞のストライキがあった期間の自殺率を，過去5年間の同時期の自殺率と比較した．人口の増加，人口の特徴，季節による自殺率の変動，年間の自殺率の特徴なども考慮に入れて，調査に影響を及ぼさないように工夫した．Mottoらの調査では，デトロイトで起きた268日間に及んだ新聞のストライキ期間中に，過去4年間と，翌年に比べて，女性の自殺率が減少していたことが確認されたが，その他の都市では仮説を証明できなかった．
