がん対策における公衆衛生の役割

　ハーバード公衆衛生大学院のBarry Bloom前学部長は次のように述べている．「米国で国民の死因は何かと尋ねたら，医療の人は，41%が心臓血管疾患，24%ががん，4%が糖尿病と答える．しかし，われわれ公衆衛生に携わる者は，19%がたばこ，14%が不適切な食事や運動不足，5%がアルコール関連と議論すべきである．現在の米国の死亡者の230万人のうち，実に50%程度は予防が可能である」¹⁾．

　これをがんに限ってみると，25～30%がたばこであり，以下アルコール摂取4%，果物と野菜の摂取不足3%等となるであろう²⁾．
