新興感染症の研究および対策の現状と課題―世界と日本

はじめに

　第二次世界大戦後，多くの抗菌薬や抗ウイルス薬が開発され，ほとんどの感染症が治療可能になるとともに，新たなワクチンの開発などにより，感染症の発生そのものもコントロールすることが可能になっていった．その結果，感染症の時代は過去のものになったという楽観的な見方がされた時期もあった．しかし，実際には1980年代以降，新たな感染症の問題が相次いで大きな問題として出現してきた．このような新たな感染症は，新興感染症(英語ではEmerging DiseasesあるいはEmerging Infectious Diseases)と呼ばれている．過去10年の間にも2003年の重症急性呼吸器症候群(Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome:以下，SARS)，2004年以降世界規模の流行を起こしている高病原性鳥インフルエンザA(H5N1)，さらには2009年北米から発生し世界中に広がったインフルエンザパンデミックA(H1N1)などの新興感染症が発生している．

　このように，新興感染症が次々に発生している背景には，グローバル化の影響も大きく関与していると考えられる．本稿では，新興感染症の現状と課題について，グローバルな視点から考えていきたい．
