自殺および自殺対策―WHOの活動

はじめに

　日本の自殺者数は4年連続で減少し，昨年に続いて3万人以下となった．では世界全体で見ると，何人ぐらいの人が自殺で亡くなっているのであろうか．WHO(世界保健機関)では，毎年80万人以上の自殺者数がおり，自殺未遂者はその10倍以上いると推計している¹⁾．自殺および自傷行為による経済的・社会的損失は莫大であり，また自殺者の遺族に与える心理的・社会的インパクトも大きい．そのため，WHOでは自殺を公衆衛生上の問題の1つととらえ対策に取り組んでいる．

　本稿ではまず世界における自殺の現状をまとめ，それに対してのWHOの活動について概要を示す．またこれらを踏まえ，日本の自殺対策や研究がどのように世界の人々に貢献することができるか考察する．
