　ヒトアフリカトリパノソーマ症(Human African Trypanosomiasis;HAT)は知らなくても「睡眠病」はご存じの方が多いのではないだろうか．HAT(睡眠病)はその名の通りアフリカ大陸の風土病であり，最終的に昏睡に陥り死亡する．病原原虫はTrypanosoma brucei rhodesienseもしくはT. b. gambienseであり，HAT患者の血中には活発に遊泳する原虫が認められる．アフリカ諸国の経済発展に伴い先進国との経済的・人的なつながりが深まるにつれ，輸入感染症としてHATが先進国の医療現場で診断されることもしばしばある．しかし先進国では馴染みのない疾患のため，確定診断が遅れ致死的な経過をたどることも多い．本稿ではHATとその媒介節足動物(ベクター)であるツェツェバエ(Glossina spp.)について概説するとともに，われわれの研究成果を紹介する．
