新型タバコのインパクト—喫煙に関する実態調査および研究にどのような影響があるか

はじめに
　タバコといえば，これまではずっと，ライターやマッチで火をつけて使う，紙巻きタバコであった．しかし，新型タバコの登場によって，日本では，そのタバコの定義が変わった．
　「あなたはタバコを吸っていますか？」
　病院でも診療所でも健康診断でも，国が実施する住民調査においても，この質問が何十年ものあいだ使われてきた¹⁾．そして，この質問に「現在吸っている」と回答した人が「タバコを吸う人」(現在喫煙者)と定義される．「以前は吸っていたが，現在はやめている」と回答した人が「やめた人」(過去喫煙者)と定義され，「もともと吸わない」と回答した人が「吸わない人」(非喫煙者)となる²⁾．
　この定義の下でモニタリングが実施され，また，喫煙者における病気になる頻度が調査されて，医学研究は実施されてきた．しかし，新型タバコの登場・普及によって医療や調査の現場に混乱がもたらされている．
