　網膜の神経細胞においてニューロトロフィンは分化，成熟，生存のすべての過程において必須の因子である。ニューロトロフィンには神経成長因子（nerve growth factor：NGF），脳由来神経栄養因子（brain-derived neurotrophic factor：BDNF），ニューロトロフィン-3，-4（neurotrophin-3，-4：NT-3，NT-4）が属し，その受容体Trk（トラック）ファミリーを介してさまざまな生理活性を示す。そのなかでもBDNF-TrkBを介した反応が，網膜神経細胞にとって最も強力な作用を引き起こす。本稿では，BDNFの基礎知識から役割，最新の眼疾患の病態へのかかわりまでを広く紹介する。
