　近年，血管内皮増殖因子（vascular endothelial growth factor：VEGF）に対する阻害薬の臨床応用によって，滲出型加齢黄斑変性や糖尿病網膜症の治療は大きく変化しつつある。今後は，各VEGF阻害薬をどのように使用するか，そして従来行われてきた治療法とどのように併用するかが課題となっていくであろう。多種多様な選択肢が生じていくなかで適切な治療戦略を確立していくために，VEGFおよびその阻害薬の基本的な性質についてよく理解しておくことは臨床上重要となる。本稿では，VEGFの基本的事項について簡潔に述べる。
