黄斑色素と加齢黄斑変性

　黄斑色素はルテインとゼアキサンチンからなり，視細胞に有害な青色可視光に対するフィルター効果と活性酸素を消去する抗酸化作用を持つ。疫学調査からルテイン，ゼアキサンチン摂取の多い個体は加齢黄斑変性の発症率が低いことが示唆され，さらに直接的な発症予防効果も検討されている。従来は困難であった生体眼での測定も複数の方法が考案され，今後は黄斑色素と加齢黄斑変性の関係がさらに詳細になると思われる。
