　ケモカインは細胞遊走を主要な作用とするサイトカインの一群である。現在45種類にのぼるケモカインが同定されている。ケモカインにはよく似た4つのシステイン残基が存在し，CXC，CC，C，CX3Cの4つのサブファミリーに分類される。単球走化性タンパク1（monocyte chemotactic protein-1：MCP-1）はCCケモカイン（CCL）に属している。MCP-1（CCL2）は1989年に単球走化性因子として精製，クローニングされた。さらにその後の研究で，その受容体CCR2を介して実に多彩な機能を示すことが判明した。MCP-1は単球・マクロファージといった免疫担当細胞からだけでなく，血管内皮細胞，線維芽細胞，尿細管上皮細胞，平滑筋細胞など多くの細胞から分泌される。一方その受容体CCR2は，単球・マクロファージ，樹状細胞，T細胞に発現がみられる。そのことからMCP-1は炎症に伴い局所で分泌され，その領域に主に単球・マクロファージを引き寄せると考えられている。そのため，慢性炎症性疾患に対する治療のターゲットとして開発が進んでいる。本稿では，MCP-1の基礎知識から役割，最新の眼疾患の病態へのかかわりまでを広く解説する。
