　コラーゲン，プロテオグリカン，フィブロネクチンなど細胞外マトリックスは組織中で種々の細胞間を埋める重要な構造物で，細胞間のバリア，シグナル伝達，組織リモデリングなど非常に重要な生理作用をもつ一方，これらの代謝バランスが崩れることにより多彩な病態を示す。この代謝バランスに関係するのがマトリックスメタロプロテアーゼ（matrix metalloproteinase：MMP）である。
