要約 私は学位論文のための研究を契機に糖鎖関連の研究を始めることになった。1996年から2年3か月の米国留学の機会を与えられたが,そこでは「常識と異なる結果から思いもよらない新展開が生まれる」ことを目の当たりにし,「有力研究施設とのクローニング競争」という貴重な経験をした。人間が知り得ていることは,ごく一部に過ぎないことがよくわかった。基礎研究を行うことで,臨床医としての総合力も充実すると信じている。
