要旨：栄養と疾患との関係については，すでに古代ギリシャのヒポクラテスの時代から指摘されてきたことであるが，近代医学において栄養療法の重要性が認識され飛躍的に発展したのは20世紀に入ってからのことである．系統的かつ合理的な臨床栄養法について多くの研究成果が報告され，実際の臨床医学に応用されて患者がその恩恵に浴することになったのは，さらに最近の数十年のことである．現在では，種々の疾患・病態の基礎にある栄養状態についての検討なくしては治療が成り立たない状況となっており，また，医療を取り巻く社会的要請に対応して栄養療法を専門的に管理するnutrition support team（NST）の設立が急速に普及し，臨床的にも医療経済的にも著明な効果をあげている．本稿では臨床栄養法の発展に関する歴史的事柄について概説し，特に現在の臨床栄養法の基礎となっている最近の展開について述べた．
