1.はじめに

　小児外科（pediatric surgery, Kinderchirurgie）は小児の先天性疾患に対して外科的治療を行う分野である．子どもは大人のミニチュアではないと言われるが，小児外科が成人外科から独立した理由は，新生児・乳児の解剖学的・生理学的特徴を理解したうえでの小児特有の術前・術中・術後管理の必要性によるものである．本稿では，欧米で始まった小児外科の歴史とわが国の小児外科の歩み，未来への展望を述べる．
