1　はじめに

　副腎外科の対象となる疾患にはクッシング症候群や褐色細胞腫のようにダイナミックなホルモン変化を伴うものがある．全身状態の急性・慢性の変化に対応できる全身管理が必須であり，上腹部の深部に存在するため外科的な手術手技を含めて筆者が学生時代であった30年前にはまだまだ危険な疾患であった．その後の外科手技および全身管理の進歩とともに副腎外科は1889年の副腎摘出術の開始から1世紀を経て，術前・術後を通じて安全に行えるようになった．これは外科のみならず医学そのものの進歩のたまものである．
