要旨：敗血症の重症化に対して有効な対策を講じるには，その時点での重症度を正確に把握するとともに，的確な予後予測を行うことが重要となる．重症度の評価法として，各評価項目が臓器特異的であり，かつ評価の簡便性を高め，どの施設でも評価可能な項目を採用して作成されたsequential organ failure assessment（SOFA）スコアは，経時的に変化する臓器障害/不全を容易に評価することができ，かつ病態の推移を的確に表すことができる．その有用性から現在，各種臨床試験の症例の層別化や効果判定などに汎用されており，これからも用いられ続けるであろう重要な評価法である．
