はじめに

　本誌に掲載されていた連載企画「外科学温故知新」が2008年の63巻7号で終了したため，歴史的な観点からコラムを担当していた者として一抹の寂しさを感じていたが，心機一転，かねてから気にかかっていたジョン・ハンター（John Hunter：1728～1793年：図1）について調査すべく2008年9月下旬にロンドンへ取材旅行に出かけた．
