◆GISTは粘膜下腫瘍として術前には診断されていることが多い．術前の診断では造影CTとEUSが重要であり，術前確定診断には多くの場合EUS-FNAが必要である．

◆病理診断では，HEで間葉系の腫瘍を確認，KIT蛋白質が陽性であればGISTと診断される．KIT陰性の場合はDOG-1やPKC-θ染色，または遺伝子解析を行う．

◆外科完全切除後は，腫瘍径，mitosis，腫瘍部位，腫瘍破裂の有無から，日本の修正FletcherやJoensuu（あるいはFletcher，Miettinen）分類に基づいてリスク分類を行う．
