人類は身体的なストレスを克服して生き抜いてきたが,現代人は精神的なストレスが多く,医師の仕事はストレスを感じることが多い.消化性潰瘍や過敏性腸症候群などの消化器疾患は精神的なストレスが原因になるが,心臓病やがんなどの生命にかかわる病気もストレスが原因になるのだろうか.仕事のストレスが大きい人はがんになりやすいのだろうか.
