はじめに

　シンバイオティクス（synbiotics）とは，「生体内，特に腸管内の正常細菌叢に作用し，そのバランスを改善することにより生体に利益をもたらす生きた微生物および微生物代謝物を含む製品」と定義されるプロバイオティクス（probiotics）と，「プロバイオティクスの働きを助ける各種オリゴ糖，糖アルコール，食物繊維水解物など（すなわち“プロバイオティクスの食餌”）の物質」であるプレバイオティクス（prebiotics）を併用する療法のことで，強力に腸内環境を整える治療^1）である．近年，シンバイオティクス療法を用いることで，腸内細菌叢の改善や，有害物質の抑制，種々の感染症のための免疫調節をもたらし，外科領域や救急領域の感染症軽減に寄与するという報告が散見される．本稿では，周術期におけるシンバイオティクスの有用性について概説する．
