「腸間膜（mesentery）は臓器である」—腸間膜はどのようにとらえられているのか

はじめに
　解剖学，特に肉眼解剖学は非常に古い学問である．そのため，もう体のすべての構造が明らかになっており，新しいものが見つかることなどないのではないかと思われている．ところが，これまで解剖学の教科書に記載のない筋や靱帯を発見したという論文がしばしば見られる．このような論文が出ると，「これまでどうして解剖学者が気付かなかったのか」という質問がわれわれにも寄せられる．
　今回の話は小さな筋や靱帯の発見というものとは少々異なる．「アイルランドのLimerick大学のCalvin Coffey教授のグループが，新しい臓器を発見した」というのである．それが「腸間膜（mesentery）」だというのである．この原典であるThe Lancet Gastroenterology ＆ Hepatologyの総説^1）は「臓器の発見」ということを述べているものではない．しかし，これを取り上げたインターネットのニュースでは，『人体に新しい臓器発見』というタイトルが付けられているものが多く，かなり興奮度が高い．ある記事では冥王星が惑星から準惑星に格下げになったことを取り上げ，その代わりに格上げになったのが「腸間膜」というような大げさな書き方もされていた．さらに，有名な解剖学書であるGray's Anatomyがその記述を改めることになったというような記事まであると，大変なことが起こっているようにみえる．はたして，インターネットの記事にあるような衝撃的な発見があったのだろうか．腸間膜（mesentery）をどのように考えているのだろうか．
　まず，腹膜，腸間膜の発生についてまとめ，次に腸間膜に関する用語について考えてみる．次に，この総説の中の解剖学的な部分について整理してみる．そのうえで，この総説の意義について考えていくことにしたい．
