閉経後骨粗鬆症は女性ホルモン(エストロゲン)の分泌低下によって骨代謝回転が上昇し,骨吸収が優位になることにより骨量減少をきたすことに起因する.骨粗鬆症は高齢者のQOL低下の原因となり,本症の発症メカニズムについて精力的な研究が進められているが,完全な解明には至っていない.これらを明らかにするには,エストロゲンの欠乏によって骨量が低下する過程を理解することが必須である.本稿ではエストロゲンの欠乏に起因する骨量減少を考察し,閉経後骨粗鬆症の病態のメカニズムを概説する.
