はじめに

　1978年に最初の体外受精児が誕生して以来，ARTは最先端の不妊治療として目覚ましい進歩をとげ，全世界に広まった．1992年にはICSI法による妊娠例が得られ，男性不妊を含めたすべての不妊症が克服されることが期待された．しかしながら1990年代後半よりその成功率の上昇は頭打ちとなり，採卵当たりの妊娠率で20～30％，生産率は15～25％で停滞し今日に至っている．この間，ART成功率向上のため新たな試みが数多くなされてきたが，本稿では主に卵子の評価法と，low quality oocyteの改善に関する新たな研究成果を概説する．
