多嚢胞性卵巣症候群(以下,polycystic ovary syndrome : PCOS)は月経異常・ホルモン異常(高LH血症または高androgen血症)・多嚢胞性卵巣を呈する症候群である1).思春期では体重増加・月経異常・男性化徴候,性成熟期では不妊症や子宮体癌が,閉経期以降は糖代謝異常・脂質代謝異常・心臓血管系合併症がPCOS患者のquality of life(QOL)低下に関与する.
WHOは,『QOLとは個人が生活する文化や価値観のなかで,目標や期待,基準および関心にかかわる自分自身の人生の状況についての認識』であると定義している2).自分自身のQOLの認識には,精神的および身体的側面がある.本稿では,PCOSの自然史に沿って,PCOSの病態とその治療が患者QOLにどのような影響を与えるか,精神的および身体的側面から解説する.
