はじめに

　多嚢胞性卵巣症候群（以下，polycystic ovary syndrome : PCOS）は月経異常・ホルモン異常（高LH血症または高androgen血症）・多嚢胞性卵巣を呈する症候群である^1）．思春期では体重増加・月経異常・男性化徴候，性成熟期では不妊症や子宮体癌が，閉経期以降は糖代謝異常・脂質代謝異常・心臓血管系合併症がPCOS患者のquality of life（QOL）低下に関与する．

　WHOは，『QOLとは個人が生活する文化や価値観のなかで，目標や期待，基準および関心にかかわる自分自身の人生の状況についての認識』であると定義している^2）．自分自身のQOLの認識には，精神的および身体的側面がある．本稿では，PCOSの自然史に沿って，PCOSの病態とその治療が患者QOLにどのような影響を与えるか，精神的および身体的側面から解説する．
