2．ES細胞と生殖医療―ES細胞は絶対不妊患者を救う細胞になりうるか

2010年度のノーベル生理学・医学賞はケンブリッジ大学名誉教授のR．エドワーズ博士に授与された．体外受精技術の開発が受賞業績である．1978年に初の体外受精児が誕生して以来，今日までに約450万人の体外受精児が出生している．そうしたなか，体外受精の恩恵に浴さない不妊患者の存在がクローズアップされている．すなわち，生殖細胞形成不全に起因する絶対不妊の患者である．エドワーズ博士はこのような推移を見越していたかのように1960年代後半，ウサギのES細胞の樹立を試みている1）．エドワーズ博士の目的の1つにはES細胞からの生殖細胞の分化誘導があったのではないかと考えている．
今回，ES細胞の樹立や核移植ES（nuclear transfer ES：ntES）細胞樹立，ES細胞からの生殖細胞の分化について紹介し，ES細胞は絶対的不妊患者を救う細胞になりうるかについて考えてみたい．
