1．単純ヘルペスウイルス感染症

　単純ヘルペスウイルス(herpes simplex virus；HSV)は，αヘルペスウイルスに属する二本鎖DNAウイルスであり，1型と2型に分類される．初感染後HSV 1型は三叉神経節に，HSV 2型は仙骨神経節の細胞中にそれぞれ潜伏感染し，通常は細胞性免疫により制御されている．しかしながら，細胞性免疫の低下などの要因が加わると，潜伏感染しているHSVは再び増殖を開始し(再活性化)，発症(回帰発症)に至ることを特徴としている．

　HSV感染症の臨床病型は口唇ヘルペスのような，通常予後良好なものから，ヘルペス脳炎，新生児ヘルペスといった重篤なものまで多彩である(表)．新生児期には母親の性器ヘルペスが感染源となり，新生児ヘルペスを発症する．新生児ヘルペスの中でも，ウイルスが全身に拡がり，多臓器不全をきたす全身型新生児ヘルペスは最も重篤であり，抗ウイルス剤治療を行った例でも死亡率は30～60%と高率である¹⁾．また，脳炎を主体とする中枢神経型新生児ヘルペスも，生命予後は全身型に比べ良好であるが，高率に神経学的後遺症を残す．
