　上肢/頸部に発生する主な静脈疾患は血栓症，静脈瘤，形成異常である．下肢静脈に較べて頻度は低いが，静脈血栓(特に頸静脈血栓)は最近，増加傾向にあり，日常診療においてしばしば遭遇する．いずれも超音波検査は診断に有用であるが，特に深部静脈血栓は理学所見や自覚症状がない例でも発生し，時に肺塞栓を引き起こすことから超音波による早期診断の臨床的意義は大きい．また，上肢/頸部の静脈は中心静脈へのアクセス血管として多用されるが，穿刺に伴う重篤な合併症を引き起こす危険性があり，超音波検査は穿刺前の血管解剖診断，安全な穿刺ガイド，モニターとして応用されている．〔臨床検査　51：305-312，2007〕
