iPS細胞利用の有効性・安全性評価

はじめに

 京都大学の山中伸弥教授がたった4つ(または3つ)の遺伝子をレトロウイルスベクターで導入することによってヒト細胞の初期化(リプログラミング)に成功した.こうして得られた人工多能性幹細胞(induced pluripotent stem cell;iPS細胞)を再生医療に応用できないか,その期待が一気に膨らんだ1).それからまもなく,アメリカのグループが,iPS細胞を使ってマウスの先天性貧血やラットのパーキンソン病モデルを治療したと発表した2,3).iPS細胞の応用研究は,世界中で非常に厳しい競争になっている.せっかくの国産技術なのだから,できれば応用も含めて日本国内で開発していきたいものである.その際,iPS細胞利用の有効性と安全性を的確に評価することが必要になる.
