■胃腸炎ウイルスは,先進国と発展途上国とを問わず,急性胃腸炎の主要な原因病原体であり,5歳未満児の下痢症死や下痢症入院の大半の原因になっている.

■ヒトに急性胃腸炎を起こすことが確立しているウイルスには,ロタウイルス,ノロウイルス,ヒトアデノウイルスF,ヒトアストロウイルス,サポウイルスの5種類が知られており,このほか,アイチウイルスが胃腸炎の原因ウイルスとして有力視されている.

■ウイルス性胃腸炎は,原因ウイルスにかかわらず,よく似た臨床症状をあらわす.

■最も重要なウイルス性下痢症の原因であるロタウイルスの予防には,経口弱毒生ワクチンが有効であり,わが国でも接種が開始されている.
