はじめに

　電気けいれん療法(electroconvulsive therapy；ECT)は気分障害の治療にきわめて有効であり，欧米では1980年代以降定電流短パルス矩形波治療器(パルス波治療器)が主に用いられている。わが国でも2002年6月にパルス波治療器が医療機器として正式に認可された。ここでは，気分障害に対するECTについて概説し，我々がうつ病に対しパルス波治療器を用いて実施したECTの臨床効果，副作用，刺激用量の変化などについてもあわせて報告する。
