抄録　統合失調症を持つ当事者は，日常生活のさまざまな場面において，家族から支援を受けている。家族はときに，当事者のケアを非常に困難と感じ，多くの介護負担感を抱えながら生活をしている。介護負担感の原因の1つとして，家族に，当事者への対応方法を含めた精神疾患，精神科医療，精神保健福祉サービスに関する適切な情報提供がなされず，家族がケアの責任を一手に抱え込んでいることが挙げられる。このような介護負担感の増加は，家族自身の不調にとどまらず，当事者との関係性の悪化にも繋がり，当事者の病気の回復を妨げる可能性もある。これまでに，家族のさまざまなニーズに対応した家族支援プログラムが開発されており，代表的なものとして家族心理教育がある。本稿では，家族支援の重要性から家族心理教育の背景，科学的根拠，施行の際のポイントなどについて概説する。
