　若年女性のうつ病はエストロゲンが扁桃体と視床下部に存在するエストロゲン受容体α（ERα）に結合して恐怖や不安を惹起することが関係し，更年期以降の女性のうつ病はセロトニン神経細胞体が存在する縫線核においてERβへのエストロゲン結合が減少し，ERβによるセロトニン合成酵素のトリプトファンヒドロキシラーゼの転写が抑制され，セロトニン合成が減少することが関与する。
　プラスチックの原料であるビスフェノール類は内分泌撹乱作用があり，ビスフェノールAFはERαの刺激作用，ERβの拮抗作用を持ち，うつ病を引き起こしうる。近年のうつ病の増加はそのような環境汚染，つまり公害が関与している可能性もある。
　エストロゲンはB細胞に作用し，IgG・IgM抗体の産生を増加させるため，自己免疫疾患は女性に多い。非定型精神病の病態生理の一部には自己免疫疾患との共通点が存在することが想定されており，そのため，非定型精神病は女性に多い精神疾患となる。
