椎間板手術（disc surgery）

　脊髄損傷の記録はエジプト王朝の時代にまで遡ることができる．下ってヒポクラテス（ca.460～370, BC）は腰痛や坐骨神経痛を知っていたふしがある²⁾．

　椎間板を最初に記述したのは，解剖学の始祖として名高いVesalius（1514～1564）である―“De humani Corporis Fabrica”（1543）．腰から下肢への痛みを坐骨神経と結びつけたのがCotugno（1736～1822）である―De ischiade nervosa commentarius．それ以後，坐骨神経痛はCotugno's diseaseと呼ばれた時代があった³⁾．
