運動器活動は慢性炎症を抑制する

骨格筋活動の新常識

　第1～3回では，有酸素運動によるBDNF(brain-derived neurotrophic factor)の増加が海馬の萎縮を防ぎ，記憶力や認知機能を向上させ，脳機能を健康に保つことを述べた．本号からは，骨格筋収縮時に活性化する転写調節因子やmyokineが全身の慢性炎症を抑制し，さまざまな疾患を防ぐ陰の立役者であることを神経科学から紹介する．

　最近の神経科学は，日々加速して新しいページを展開している感がある．躯幹や四肢を動かすことが，いかに全身の健康維持に重要な役割を果たすかが明らかになるにつれ，運動器の機能維持と向上を目ざす整形外科領域に，また一つ新しい使命が加わったことを実感する．
