近年，ポストゲノムシークエンス時代の研究手法の1つとして，タンパク質レベルでの網羅的解析であるプロテオミクスが盛んである．このプロテオミクスの技術が疾患の早期診断や病因の解明，バイオマーカー開発，さらに創薬研究への適応など，医療技術に応用されている．
プロテオミクスは，遺伝子を網羅的に解析する“ゲノミクス”と，タンパク質を意味する“プロテイン”を合わせた造語であり，1995年にWilkinsらにより提唱された15)．プロテオーム解析とも呼ばれ，生物の細胞・組織レベルにおいて，ある静的状態におけるタンパク質発現全体を解析する研究手法である．2001年にヒトゲノムの全塩基配列が発表され，その全貌が明らかとなったが，タンパク質発現とゲノムの発現レベルは必ずしも一致しない．それは生体内のタンパク質が遺伝情報に基づいて転写・翻訳され，さらにリン酸化や糖鎖修飾などの翻訳後修飾，分解の影響を受け，最終発現型として機能するからである．したがって，プロテオミクスでは，ゲノム解析では把握しきれない情報を解析することが可能である．
