高齢者の足関節は老人性皮膚萎縮のため，真皮の伸展性に乏しく，皮下組織が薄いため，足関節周囲骨折においてはプレートなど内固定を留置すると，皮膚組織の二次的な障害を来しやすい．また，加齢に伴う骨脆弱性や運動機能の低下により，松葉杖歩行ができず部分荷重が困難なため，術後の荷重開始が遅れ，入院期間が長引く傾向にある．高齢者足関節周囲骨折に対するリング型外固定器を用いた整復固定は脆弱な軟部組織に対して低侵襲であり，その強固な固定力から，骨強度が著しく低下した脆弱性骨折であっても早期荷重が可能という特徴がある．
