近年，多くのインプラントが内固定に使用可能であるが，使い分けに関しては統一的見解がない．安定した骨折ではスクリュー固定のみで十分であるが，不安定性が強くなれば，より回旋や剪断力に対する固定性の高いインプラントの使用が望ましい．また高齢者では転位が残存したとしても早期に荷重可能な治療方法の選択が必要であり，一方，若年者では可能な限り解剖学的整復とそれを維持し得るインプラントの選択が必要である．インプラントが進歩した反面で，挿入手技はやや煩雑となっているため，確実な固定を行うために手技に習熟する必要がある．
