外反母趾の疫学,病態,診断について概説した.外反母趾は非常に有病率が高く,65歳以上では,全体で30〜40%,女性では35〜50%,男性でも20%程度とされている.近年,外反母趾に関する3次元的な病態の解明が進み,第1足根中足関節でのhypermobility,第1中足骨頭の回旋,種子骨の外側偏位などが特に注目されている.評価法は,本邦ではJSSFスケール,SAFE-Qが広く用いられている.臨床の現場では,これらの基本的事項について外反母趾患者に正しく伝える必要がある.
