骨折治療に関する手術部位感染(SSI)の診断基準は長らく統一されたものがなかった．このため，2016年12月にAO財団が中心となり，世界中から骨折治療や感染症治療のエキスパートが集まってコンセンサス・ミーティングが開催され，新しい骨折関連感染症(FRI)の基準が策定された．基本項目は人工関節周囲感染(PJI)の基準と一部重なるが，FRI独自の項目もあり，今後の骨折関連のSSI診断の世界標準として，知見を新たにしておく必要がある．
