Ⅰ　はじめに

　わが国の異物による家庭での窒息死の状況を『厚生の指標』から抜粋すると，図1のようになる。米国でも同様に，年間約500名の子ども達が異物で窒息死している^1）。高齢者，乳幼児が多いのは周知のことであるが，今後の高齢化社会，乳幼児へのさらなる安全対策の点からも異物症の取り扱いは重要である。さらに，種々の疾病が解明されようとも，異物症がなくなることはなく，気道・食道異物症の診断・治療は耳鼻咽喉科のとして最も重要な部門を占める。
