創傷治癒の理学療法―米国におけるWound Care ＆ Physical Therapy

はじめに

　「褥瘡や潰瘍が理学療法外来で治療できる」

　2001年に，米国イリノイ州シカゴの外来理学療法クリニックでWound Careの理学療法の実際を見たときのことは忘れられない．理学療法士が積極的に物理療法・運動療法などの専門的理学療法を駆使し，慢性期の治りにくい褥瘡や潰瘍が効果的に治癒していく姿を見て，理学療法の重要性を痛感した．

　なぜ，米国では高度で専門的なWound Careの理学療法を受けることができるのだろうか．理学療法士は臨床でどのようなWound Careを行っているのか，また，日本でこのような理学療法士の活動は可能だろうか．本稿では，まず，米国のWound Careにおける歴史，特に米国理学療法士協会（American Physical Therapy Association：APTA）の活動の歴史について紹介し，理学療法士の活動，理学療法の対象となる主な疾患，そして具体的な理学療法治療を紹介する．
