視床は間脳に位置する神経核群で視床内髄板によって前核群，内側核群，外側核群に大別され，さらに12の核から構成されている．視床は感覚系の中継中枢として知られているが，個々の神経核は同側の大脳皮質に投射し，またその部位からの相互の線維連絡を受けることが知られている（図1）1）．
Schmahmann2）は，視床の機能を，網様核・髄板内核による注意覚醒系，前核群の辺縁系，後内側腹側核（ventral posteromedial nucleus of thalamus：VPM）・後外側腹側核（ventral posterolateral nucleus of thalamus：VPL）・外側（lateral geniculate body：LGB）および内側膝状体（medial geniculate body：MGB）などの特殊感覚系，前腹側核（anteroventral thalamic nucleusa：AV）・外側腹側核（ventrolateral thalamic nucleus：VL）などの運動系，後外側核（lateral posterior nucleus of thalamus：LP）・背側内側核（mediodorsal thalamic nucleus：MD）・視床枕（Pulvinar）などの連合系の5系に分類している．
