2004年に米国胸部医学会（American Thoracic Society：ATS）から「デュシェンヌ型筋ジストロフィー（Duchenne muscular dystrophy：DMD）の呼吸ケアのコンセンサス・ステートメント」1），2007年には米国胸部医師学会（American College of Chest Physicians：ACCP）による「DMDの麻酔・鎮静における呼吸とその他のケアに関するコンセンサス・ステートメント」2）が発表された．これらを基盤として，2009年には米国疾病予防管理センター（Centers for Disease Control and Prevention：CDC）が作成を推進した「DMDのケアの国際コンセンサス・ガイドライン」3,4）が公表され，各国語への翻訳が進められた．これはTREAT-NMD（欧米の神経筋疾患患者会）のホームページからダウンロードができる5）．
神経筋疾患のモデル疾患としてDMDが扱われ，他の疾患でも応用が可能であるとされていたが，その後，脊髄性筋萎縮症（spinal muscular atrophy：SMA）6），先天性筋ジストロフィー7），先天性ミオパチー8）などDMD以外の神経筋疾患に関する国際ガイドラインも相次いで公表され，2012年には英国胸部疾患学会（British Thoracic Society：BTS）からも「筋力低下のある小児の呼吸マネジメントのガイドライン」9）が作成された．筋萎縮性側索硬化症（amyotrophic lateral sclerosis：ALS）に関する呼吸ケアの総説も発表されている10,11）．
