オーストラリアの理学療法（physiotherapy）の歴史

　オーストラリアの理学療法の歴史は古く，始まりは1906年まで遡る．当初はphysiotherapist（以下，理学療法士）としてではなく，マッサージセラピストとしての活動であったが，第一次世界大戦中に兵士の治療やリハビリテーションを担当することなどにより徐々に活動の幅，知名度を広げていき，第二次世界大戦中には理学療法士として，ポリオの治療をはじめ医療界において替えのきかない職種として認知されるようになっていった^1）．

　現在では，オーストラリアの理学療法士は欧米諸国のような理学療法の先進国と同様に開業権を有し，診断，治療，そして予防と，幅広い活動を行っている^1）．2014年11月現在，オーストラリアは理学療法界のなかで，特に筋骨格系の理学療法において世界で最も進んだ国の一つとしてみなされている．
