はじめに—TENSとは

 米国理学療法士協会(American Physical Therapy Association:APTA)では,物理療法を電気治療的物理療法(electrotherapeutic modalities),狭義の物理療法(physical agents),力学的物理療法(mechanical modalities)の3分野に分類している1).経皮的電気刺激治療(transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation:TENS)は,一般的電気療法,バイオフィードバック療法,治癒促進のための電気療法,機能的電気刺激(functional electrical stimulation),高電圧パルス療法,神経筋電気刺激(neuromuscular electrical stimulation),イオントフォレーシスなどを含む電気治療的物理療法に含まれている1).TENSという用語は皮膚から電気刺激を実施するという意味を示しているだけであり,治療目的を反映していない用語である.したがって,米国国立衛生研究所(National Institute of Health:NIH),APTA,英国国民保険サービス(National Health Service:NHS),カナダ理学療法士協会,国際疼痛学会(International Association for the Study of Pain:IASP)では鎮痛目的の電気治療として定義2)づけており,本稿でも同様に定義する.
